Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Malia Hosaka was not a wrestling fan while growing up. She got into the business in order to prove to her father and brother that she could pull it off. The adventure – which started out as a brief one – turned into a life-long affair. Nowadays, Malia is a veteran of the squared circle, inspiring youngsters with her stamina, lifestyle, in-ring image and character.
If you’re looking for someone who doesn’t just know all the personalities who have actively shaped the world of women’s wrestling but wrestled them all, Malia is your woman. Trained by the legendary Killer Kowalski in the beginning of her career, Malia Hosaka has wrestled for pretty much every major promotion out there.
She wrestled for Harley Race (WLW), WXW, WWA as well as for the LPWA where she acted as a solid mid-card wrestler for a while in singles matches, and was quite successful in tag matches with her tag team partner, Bambi. As the LPWA went under, she began wrestling on the independent circuit, facing opponents like Debbie Combs, Leilani Kai and other such caliber names.
Those of you who have been avid fans of hers for a good while probably know about her appearances in the WCW. She wrestled Madusa Micelli there, and was defeated on one occasion by none other than Akira Hokuto, one of joshi puroresu’s outstanding personalities.
The WCW’s women’s cruiserweight championship challenge featured Malia as the only American to face the Japanese cruiserweight invasion. She was eventually pinned by Japanese teenage sensation Meiko Satomura following a giant splash off the top rope.
After her stint with the WCW, Malia headed over to the WWF, where she was supposed to explode onto the scene in a Rocky-Balboa like fashion, by challenging ladies’ champion Ivory as a spectator. By then however, she was much too famous for the stunt to succeed. People instantly recognized her, and the storyline got busted.
Following that misfortune, her character slowly faded away on the WWF’s writers’ desk, and she was released by the company a year later.
A staunch opponent of T&A in ladies’ wrestling, Malia has never been the one to give up easily. She continued her wrestling career fighting for the PGWA, Shimmer Wrestling and other independent promotions. One of the most stylish ladies ever to hit the ring, Malia has worked for wrestling companies which were under contract with the Army to entertain soldiers stationed all over the world.
Having traveled everywhere where duty called her, Malia has certainly done her share of keeping the troops’ spirits up through the wrestling shows she took part in.
